The Switchblade in operation

On the open road, riders switch to the lower (Speed) position, to enjoy the comfort and speed advantages of a racing recumbent, typically holding about 2 mph over conventional bicycles on all but the hilliest terrain. Alternatively, use this position to reduce wind resistance and effort at a given speed.

The ‘row-power’ system aids pedalling and reduces rider stress at high effort. This system accounts for the majority of the Switchblade’s improved climbing ability over conventional recumbents. Climbing performance is obviously dependant on the rider’s condition but most riders quickly match their climbing performance on a conventional bicycle. Even on flatter terrain, judicious use of the ‘row-power’ system reduces rider stress and fatigue over long distances.

The learning curve

Conventional cyclists usually need a little time to readjust to the recumbent ride position but the default high ‘Climb’ position eliminates the low-speed balance difficulties of low-seat recumbents and allows most new riders to feel confident after only a few minutes.

Importantly, new riders can defer use of the ‘row-power’ system until after they are fully familiar with the feel of balancing the Switchblade.

As well as improved speed, the Swithcblade’s ride position and row-power systems offer riders a greater level of engagement with their machine and a more exhilarating ride. In other words, riding the Switchblade is great fun: even after hours on the road, switching to the ‘Speed’ position after a climb and accelerating away is a real thrill.
